My story

This is my twist on Christian Aid's "70k in May" sponsored movement challenge to help people push back against poverty - for example in Burundi where malnourishment and poverty affect more than 70% of people.

My aim is to walk at least 70km between sending out the invite to sponsor me and the end of April. More interesting, maybe harder, than in May, because we'll be on a multi-bus tour of market towns for part of that time - check for updates below.

Christian Aid are working to empower families build reliable and diverse incomes. Take Aline, in Burundi, pictured above. She found a lifeline in Christian Aid to help her escape extreme poverty after an early marriage ended in abuse and violence. We helped her with small business training and she set up as a grocery wholesaler. Today, Aline can afford food, clothes, and essential healthcare for her family.

Money raised this Christian Aid Week can help ensure more people get skills and knowledge to fulfil their hopes and ambitions.  £10 could provide one person with the training that supports their family to set up a small business, such as selling home-grown vegetables.

Together we can make a lasting difference.  Thank you for your support.

Journey completed - thanks for your encouragement.

Pleased to report that I reached the doubled distance target (140km walked) during the return trip - probably while exploring Birmingham New Street station between trains.

This page will remain open until the end of May, so if you haven't yet given to the Christian Aid Week appeal, which help families facing much greater challenges, please do.

Thanks and good news

Thankyou to everyone who has supported this appeal so far. I'm pleased to report I have achieved my initial distance goal, and (including the gift aid) fundraising target. But if you're viewing this and haven't yet contributed, don't be put off! On Friday 19th I passed the 70km total (deducting the first km each day as pottering around indoors) - probably during a lovely woodland walk with a friend. I'm now aiming to double that by the end of April.

Journeying blessings to you all.

How your money helps

Poverty pushed Aline to the brink. She was abused, homeless and hungry. But Aline pushed back harder. With Christian Aid funded small business training, she achieved what had seemed impossible, a vital income for her and her children.

Fundraising this Christian Aid Week will ensure more people in Burundi get the skills and knowledge they need to push back against the inhumanity of poverty.
