My story

We are taking on the challenge of cycling 70km in the month of May to improve our fitness, to explore some cycle rides near us and to raise awareness and money for the fantastic charity Christian Aid!

Lucy has been working for Christian Aid for 18 months and now she wants to give something back and David wants to join her for this challenge. Christian Aid is an amazing charity that work in a collaborative way with communities across the world, to help them fight for climate justice, gender justice, to build peace, and ultimately end poverty. Christian Aid takes an inclusive approach to helping people of all faiths and none, and from every background.

The money you donate could help ensure more people get the skills and knowledge they need to fulfil their hopes and ambitions. £10 could provide one person in Burundi with the training that supports their family to set up a small business, such as selling home-grown vegetables.

We look forward to updating you on our progress with the challenge and to exploring Edinburgh’s cycle routes.

Together we can make a lasting difference. Thank you for your support!

We are at 73km!

We are delighted that after a couple of rides last week we have now ridden 73km total so we have hit our target of cycling 70km in the month of May. We are not done though we have decided to keep going with our challenge until the end of May, we are now seeing how many kms we can manage before then! We will keep you posted!

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated and who has encouraged us, we are really grateful, you have all kept us going!

Inspired by Susan Chimbayo from Malawi

Susan is an amazing lady from Malawi who I had the privilege of meeting last year. She has mobilised farmers across Malawi and helped them form cooperatives in order for them to collectively sell the pigeon peas (yellow split peas) that they grow and get a better price. This all started when Susan faced adverse personal circumstances and needed to make money to support her family, so she researched the best crop to farm and started to grow pigeon peas. Susan has set up an organisation that works in partnership with Christian Aid, last year she asked for funds to build warehouses to store farmer's pigeon peas to sell them when the market price was better. Giving money to Christian Aid helps to support creative and inspiring people like Susan who are working hard to improve the lives of communities in places like Malawi.

Christian Aid's work in Ethiopia

South Omo in Ethiopia has experienced a devastating cycle of droughts and floods over the past few years, this is linked to more extreme weather as a result of climate change. This has impacted more than 79,000 people, many of whom have been displaced and lost their homes, livelihoods and infrastructure. I have been really inspired by local charities that work in partnership with Christian Aid, they have been assessing the needs of local communities and have undertaken work such as repairing boreholes, running a vet program to improve the health of livestock and providing much needed psychosocial support to people. This relief work has happened partly through a grant from the Scottish Government to Christian Aid, but also because donations from people to Christian Aid support the local NGOs to function. So, I hope this inspires you with the sort of projects your money can fund, thank you for giving!

Challenge Update- 43km cycled so far!

David and I have been loving taking part in this challenge so far! We have managed 5 cycle rides so far heading out in the evenings or the weekend. We are enjoying exploring places we haven't been before and going to local parks where we normally walk. Our cycle rides have ranged from 5km to 16.2km and we are looking forward to getting out again this weekend. Thanks for your messages and donations, it is so encouraging and helping us to keep going.

10km warm up ride!

Today we enjoyed a bike ride along the Union Canal in Edinburgh and then a stop at Saugnton rose garden to look at the lovely flowers. We came back via the Waters of Leith. It was lovely to get out on our bikes and good to start warming up for our 70k in May challenge!

How your money helps

Poverty pushed Aline to the brink. She was abused, homeless and hungry. But Aline pushed back harder. With Christian Aid funded small business training, she achieved what had seemed impossible, a vital income for her and her children.

Fundraising this Christian Aid Week will ensure more people in Burundi get the skills and knowledge they need to push back against the inhumanity of poverty.
