My story

We are taking on the challenge of 70K in May. Why? To help people push back against poverty.

We will be away from home during Christian Aid Week, so we thought we'd hire bikes on our holiday in Devon, and cycle the Tarka Way, aiming to cover 70km. It'll will be the first time back on two wheels in over seven years! (Our banner photo shows us on bikes during a holiday in Croatia in 2017.)

Christian Aid is about more than providing aid. It's led by Christians, but works in many places in the world where people are affected by climate change and political injustice, irrespective of their religious persuasions. It supports people (particularly women) to grow crops that can resist drought and set up businesses to sell their produce. Importantly, it campaigns against climate change and unfair tax regimes that impact disproportionately on the poorest people in the world.

When we despair about how desperate the situation is in so many parts of the world, and how little we can do to make things better, we recall that "whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25, vv 40-45

The money raised can help ensure more people get the skills and knowledge they need to fulfil their hopes and ambitions.  £10 could provide one person with the training that supports their family to set up a small business, such as selling home-grown vegetables, or grains to export.

Together we can make a lasting difference.  Thank you for your support!

We've done it!

Thank you to all our supporters!  Spurred on by your generosity, we have today cycled 70km - in one day! - along the Tarka Trail from Barnstable in Devon, south to Great Torrington and back, and then north to Braunton and back (and then a little bit of repeat until we'd clocked up the full 70k). Now too tired to stand and too sore to sit down....!

We'll post pictures on the Buxton Methodist Church Facebook page.

And we've nearly reached our increased fundraising target too!

Increased target

Thanks to the wonderful generosity of family and friends, we've decided to increase our target.

We also bought cycling shorts / leggings with padded bottoms yesterday, in readiness for our ride - second hand from our outdoor local charity shop, in aid of the Thomas Theyer Foundation |

How your money helps

Poverty pushed Aline to the brink. She was abused, homeless and hungry. But Aline pushed back harder. With Christian Aid funded small business training, she achieved what had seemed impossible, a vital income for her and her children.

Fundraising this Christian Aid Week will ensure more people in Burundi get the skills and knowledge they need to push back against the inhumanity of poverty.
